Development of a method for obtaining gamma – Oryzanol from rice bran oil
- funding program: ZIM-KF (BMWi)
- term: 01.10.2015 – 30.09.2017
- project partner: ERM Dipl.-Ing. Siesing GmbH & Co. KG
Initial position:
Rice bran oil (the oil from the rice bowls) and above all the gamma-oryzanol contained therein have increasingly aroused the interest of research in recent years. Gamma-oryzanol has an antioxidant effect and is expected to have a positive effect on the human organism.
Global production of rice bran oil is 1-1.4 million tonnes. A content of 1-2% of oryzanol would result in 10,000-28,000 tons of pure oryzanol.
Applications for oryzanol may be in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and nutritional fields. These areas are served by deliveries from Asia at a low rate.
To obtain oryzanol in large quantities via a relatively simple and inexpensive process, a laboratory method already known from the literature should be converted into an effective industrial process.
Aim:
The aim of the project is the development of a technology for the production of Oryzanol from rice bran oil.
Within the project, a simple and environmentally friendly extraction processes has to be developed (project part PPM) as basis for the development of a process in industrial scale by the project partner. The company Siesing will select appropriate technological equipment and develop an optimal technology, which can be particularly offered in the South American and Asian markets and realized in the short term as a plant.
Results:
During the project, it became clear that on the one hand raw rice grind flour oil as a starting material is only suitable to a limited extent, and on the other hand that the originally intended refurbishment of the crude product would be technically too expensive and thus the process would be too expensive.
As a result, very expensive purification steps have been dispensed with a developed process in which an oryzanol extract is obtained, which can be easily incorporated into products. Each process step was considered individually to determine the best possible parameters. Extracts with a purity of about 25% were obtained.
