04/2015, Finished R&D Projects

Development of a method for the use of coffee grounds for products in the cosmetic industry

  • funding program: ZIM-KF (BMWi)
  • term: 01.04.2015 – 31.03.2017
  • project partner: Maschinenfabrik Reinartz GmbH & Co KG

Initial position:

Producers of extract coffee process coffee beans to coffee powder. During the aqueous extraction of roasted raw beans an extract, which is further processed to the final product and a moist residue are obtained (coffee grounds). This coffee ground has a moisture content of about 60% and contains about 26% oil on dry matter and is currently used as fuel for power generation or is partially disposed.

The material use of the by-product coffee grounds is of considerable economic interest of the extract coffee maker. There is also interest from the cosmetics industry to replace the on the market available very high-priced coffee oil by coffee groundsoil and to create new products with improved properties.

Aim:

The aim of the project is the development of cosmetic raw materials and a series of cosmetic products (skin and hair care products) on the basis of groundsoil. The coffee groundsoil will be obtained by a modified pressing process and then refined into a high-quality oil.

Results:

The project objectives have been achieved. There have been developed technologies for:

  • oil extraction and
  • oil processing.

The treated coffee oil was further processed into cosmetic products and samples were prepared and manufactured for:

  • Body lotion
  • Body oil
  • Face mask
  • Shower Oil
  • Cleaning foam
  • Face Cream
  • Lip Balm.

The products could be exploited on the market.
