Initial position:
Waxes are an important raw material in the production of printing inks. These are used in micro-particle form, as powders or dispersions to achieve abrasion and scratch resistance, as well as water-repellent effects. Although the protective function in printability is given by the wax, its use gives rise to limiting features such as low suspension stability, a negative effect on gloss, reduced bond adhesion in laminating applications and uneconomical use of residual ink. The improvement of these features not only gives ink manufacturers the opportunity to produce quality products, but also opens up the possibility to include other areas. By changing the surface activity of the wax, it will be possible to improve the property profile. Proteins are suitable as “polar group carriers” due to their hydrophilicity. By forming a complex of wax and protein, the technical and technological requirements of the printing ink industry could be met.
Aim:
The aim of this project is to develop a process for the production of novel wax-protein complexes for the production of water-based printing inks. Functionalized field bean protein isolates are incorporated into waxes to generate surface-active complexes. The novel wax-protein complexes (WPK) eliminate mechanical, optical and application weaknesses and simplify production processes. Such WPKs are not yet known.
